Musica es bonita

Hola, mi familia,

Estoy a hablar espanol (well, I am trying to learn spanish and maybe even speak it)

Here is an amazing video from Sigur Ros (Jonsi is the lead singer of them. Dad, I gave you a CD of thier music for christmas one year.) The video features The Perlan Theatre Group, a dance/theatre troupe of mentally retarded/developmentally disabled people. The troupe is based in the Icelandic city of Reykjavik.

The video opens with the following quotes:
Without music, life would be a mistake - Nietzsche
Music was invented to confirm human loneliness - Lawrence Durrell
Music is the shorthand of emotion - Leo Tolstoy
Music expresses that which can not be said on which it is impossible to be silent. - Victor Hugo
Music is a moral law.It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaeity to life and to everything. - Plato
A painter paints pictures on canvas, but musicians paint their pictures on silence. - Leopold Stokowski
See deep enough and you see musically: the heart of nature everywhere being music. - Thomas Carlyle
Music can name the un-nameable, communicate the unknowable. - Leonard Bernstein
In the end, I think of music as the saving grace of all of humanity. - Henry Miller
Music is well said to be the speech of angels, in fact nothing allowed among the utterances to man is said to be so divine. It brings us near to the infinite. - Thomas Carlyle

Absolutely Flying

Ahhh Spring - its unjust hope and promise. New life - in your face. Well this Spring I am of new lessons learned. I think the best part of these new lessons is how I have found new friends, and also now I have a way to find new music. I never realized how important finding new music could be!!!

Music IS Back and MORE

I posted a music sidebar with great Aaron Copland - and I texted Allie and she seemed in good spirits - her first reply was "Do I know you?" Good responce from an unknown number. Love you guys!!
I really really like playlist.com - I find an artist I like (Marie Digby) and add a song to my current playlist. Then I search other people's playlists - thinking they might have new artists in a similar music style - and I can listen to as long or short of any songs on their playlist and then if I like the song can in a couple of clicks add it to an existing or make a new playlist. I have found a ton of new artists this way!!!

Strange Saturday

I went to a math seminar this morning from 9-11 where a former student and now a Phd teacher at West Point in 3D Calculus gave a presentation on "Math The Universal Language". The young lady (Jessica Libertini) is quite bright and her Mom had called and written a letter inviting me to please come. Seems I inspired her to become a mathematician - hmmmmm. I remember Jessica as a learner like no other - totally off the wall and random. At the end of the fun seminar (we did manipulatives - hoo haa I played the whole time) (off the wall and random - hmmm) wouldn't you know it Mrs. Libertini asked me to stand and introduced me and said that at a parent conference in middle school I brought to their attention just how bright and special - and gifted - Jessica was in math, and how they took that very seriously and helped Jessica pursue the career she now has. Wasn't a dry eye in the place - and I got to tell you I was looking for a hole to climb in - really embarassed as they gave me an ovation - all I could say was, "No - thank you - Jessica actually taught me also." Wasn't expecting that.

Of mice and (wo)men

so this week has sucked. I have been working about 16 hours a day and then trying to sleep the other hours. But lo and behold around 5 am i get woken up every damn day to sound of mice - scratching chewing scrambling in the ceiling or the walls. One morning i took my broom and gently tapped the ceiling to get them to stop and shut up (but gently because i have this fear of tapping to hard the ceiling opens up and it is raining mice). But those rat bastards did not stop. It has been poopy. In fact i have decided that i need to move NOW. So now i am looking at apartment listings even though my lease doesn't end until October. Even though i have no time for anything except for work. Even though I am going to africa in two weeks for two weeks. Even though we are also planning our office move now.

Bah. But i recognize that i can't do it now so i am not going to the open house or contact this lady about her apt. But i am going to inflate my tires get on my bike and tour the neighborhood and see where else might work.

But not right now... i am going to finish my coffee, stretch a little and go the grocery store. This is the first day without work in weeks. I am tired, i am embracing the lethargy, i am hugging tight this slow down. I am watching "Support your local sheriff" with james garner - i used to love this movie. I am going to read the brief and wonderous life of oscar wao - so far excellent.

and i am going to pray that my father relaxs about this and keeps the blog open - we may not post every day - we may only post once a week. But it is a nice way to keep in touch and i like it. It isn't that we don't care or are foresaking our family - for me it is quite the opposite. I love you dad but chill the funk out. this is good - we love you.

A Good Laugh

This is seriously happening. I eat Basic 4 for breakfast. I use Cottonelle Aloe TP(don't laugh). I buy Basic 4 in large packages from BJ's. Lately I have noticed that they have stopped carrying the Basic 4. I first noticed in Lexington Park, then Waldorf. I finally found the last pallet in Bowie - I bought 2 packages. Now they too have none. Hmmm - must adjust my breakfast.
Now the same thing has been happening to my TP. I had this coupon for a dollar off a 12 pack. I went to Food Lion, Safeway, then to Walmart in PF. None - not a roll on the shelves. So I went to Waldorf - Shopper's Food Warehouse - Target - not a single roll. Why are the supply gods taking away my goods?
Then today I went to Giant and by golly they had the 12 pack in stock. I bought two (using my coupon for sure) and then as I got home I thought as I climbed the stairs carrying my 24 rolls of TP - maybe I ought to go back and buy the other 8 12-pack that were left in stock.
I mean I can make adjusts to my breakfast needs but TP needs - come on. And then it hit if I did that it would be like the time-o-meter which would probably dictate how much time I had left on Earth - and I haven't stopped laughing since - the idea that I had 10 12-packs of the aloe TP stached in my closet and when it was gone - well, that would be it. No more TP - no more Charlie. It really is not funny - remember that this is the TP I take to Montana or Florida or Maine when I travel. This is serious - real serious.

sorry no posts

Hey guys, sorry no posts...

So shit has hit the fan involving Alessandra. She may fail three classes this quarter. I have been heavily involved in sorting it out. Not terrible news (like pregnancy) but just she is really struggling right now and is in desperate need of her mom's support. All my energy is devoted to her right now. I will tell you more details later. She is depressed and we are going to get her counseling.

Her computer has been taken due to poor grades so you can not send her uplifting emails or posts on her facebook. However, she has her phone and you can text her. 703-408-5683.

Thanks for understanding.
love ya guys

for jonathan

i have been meaning to send this to you, but in one of the films you did, you used a song by Serge Gainsbourg and i thought you find this interesting - MC Solaar, a french rapper, used it as well in this song:

Spring fever

So while my father was posting snarky comments to my wall on facebook, i was outside enjoying what i had presumed to be a much warmer day than it actually was. I went into Manhattan and came up out of the subway at union square into an intolerable crowd and white feathers. I turned around and saw a throng of folks with pillows. It was a large public pillow fight. I turned to the cop next to me and asked what was going on. She replied ruefully, "well, it's ahhh...it's a pillow fight."

I bought a cd of Aaron Copland because i have been craving Rodeo. That music, because i think Dad used to play it all the time, is some of my favorite. It is great for spring

My spring jam 2010 (although it came out a couple of years ago is Yo La Tengo's Mr. Tough.

Speaking of spring - here is spring in the city.

Love y'all (and concur with danielle about welcome to lynn reed and jonathan - may you post more than I),

Tree Clean Up

Instead of Mr. Clean, it's Mr. Green!

We just finished cutting out the limbs that were damaged by the snow. We hauled many large branches into the woods. What a job, but many hands made a big job smaller. Our task master is now treating to lunch and guess where?! Oh yes, the Chinese buffet!
The next question is, are we dyeing (sp?) Easters eggs today or not? We cannot disappoint the young in heart!
Love to all and Happy Easter!

Leaving For Mexico

Gloomy as crap outside - cup and a half of joe (I am writing a 1930's crime novel so shut up)don't make it less murky and that damned foghorn, deep waaahoooo over and over. Tired of walking this beat.

Seriously, the above was a tangent that came out of nowhere - what I sat down to write was as I re-read the posts and comments we have made in this short time, it made me feel a closeness with you two I haven't felt in a long time. Tres nice.

Wonderful Way To Start A Day

Excellent posts - only when you have the time. Great work!!! I love you.
Went to Parkers Creek this morning and as is usual it silenced me with its silence.  Too many voices and shouting inside me lately - seems like this Spring the rise of brillance in new life is a bit overwhelming - almost in an audacious manner - like how dare you glum gus - take these blooming buds and popping flowers - try and avoid these - hah!  Don't like that - huh? Want to keep that dumb old brown of Winter around do you? Well, I'll show you - pop, blam, wham be damned - way too many flowers and greens - overwhelming - just let me grump dammit. Stop all this positive crap.

music channel part 2

So this is my new favorite thing:
NPR's All Songs Considered

it is great - you can listen to the shows - subscribe to the podcast and then listen on whatever listening device you choose.

lovely.

this is how we do it

hey so i think i am posting on the blog but not 100% sure. Sorry to be tardy but this weekend went by too quick...I went to ari's house on sunday evening and she, john, and a couple of other folks tried to learn to play bridge. Apparently while i am not competitive with sports or life cycle achievements (grin), i am super competitive with cards. My god, dad, what did you do to me. So anyway, i am bossy and overly opinionated about a game i don't remember how to play - it was a lot of fun. And We Won - the ladies against the gentlemen.

It was fun to remember bidding and the contract and taking tricks. The fun was furthered by wine and cupcakes and popcorn. It doesn't get too much better than that. If only it had been hearts.

Between learning how to knit and playing bridge, I am well on my way to moving to Florida - golf cart a-go-go.

love ya fools.

The Music Channel Blog

Let's post songs and music we find that we want to share...

This is a band called Ladytron
The song is FREAKING awesome. The video is pretty cool not sure what it means with the Japanese landscapes and faces in the landscape, but cool nonetheless.

Very frustrating, especially coupled with emails about us not caring. Silly goose. Of courrse, we care. However, I do not have a lot of extraneous time. I literally work three jobs. I teach a 9th grade reading, a 9th grade math, an 11th grade math at one school. In my other school, I teach two 1st graders, one 5th grader and added are three 3rd graders for reading. Then my other job is in the office, inventory of books, label them, organize them...help other teachers find resources...etc...

And I have a social life of sorts. Sara and Rick and I do things - for example - shop for groceries or our pets or shoes. Or we watch movies. We are friendly with our neighbors who come by to chat. Sometimes we go out for dinner. If it is just Rick and I, we bring a book to read. If Sara and I we have girl chat which is nice. I have not had many girls as friends. We do yardwork. Today, Mike an old dude down the street brought his large crate for Rufus. So I assembled a cage with him. I am sort of seeing this guy, Marcus. Nothing serious. I have a couple people I know at Dennys that i chat with. Then my weekends are focused on the kids. It is really wonderful to have them stay with me overnight or for two nights. Although it was tough at first.

However, I DID IT. I am posting and commenting.

Algebra and Allie

Just got off the phone with allie's algebra teacher. Seems she is missing 19 out of 31 assignments. YIKES. She could fail. Yet on her last test (systems of equations) she got an 85. She knows it, but is not doing it.

Some of it is time management - too much time on computer.
Some of it is perfectionism. She won't turn in incomplete or shoddy work (but something is better than nothing).
Some is good old fashion depression.
Some is probably boredom.

Well, I have a challenge ahead of me. To help her be successful here despite any of the above.

Sunday is a time for . . . . . . . . .

Reed and Jon know Wine

When I visited Reed in Savannah a couple of weeks ago, I was surprized by how knowlegeable he and Jon were about wines - we sampled quite a few and had a great time.  Jon is a huge MAC fan - he has a 27" IMac and knows it inside and out!!  I learned a lot.
While these guys wait for something on the computer they continually kept playing their DS Nintendo game machines - real multi-taksing.

Waiting For Godothiers

I guess life is too busy with the mundane tasks of everyday for anyone to give a minute or two to stay in contact and share some funnies or anything for that matter.  That's okay because I won't let it matter to me and obviously it does not matter to anyone else.  In it's form this will last for one more week and then all it will be different - I promise.
Here's Jack in Florida - for what that is worth - and his latest squeese Lois Lane.   Seriously - that is her name - and no she is not dating Superman.

Oh Yeah - Barriers

52 degrees outside - just warm enough to walk around the screened in porch and talk to myself. Anyway we learned about the barriers that keep us from being who we are - but now I know and realize what it is I have to be doing.

Hope you follow.

If not - stay tuned.

Knowing

Okay - now I can add the daily dirt - my day centered on lunch (as usual) and hanging my wash out in the beautiful sunshine. I will post more soon as I can.

As I re-read my journal - which I add to periodically - it hits me every so often with the truths that I become aware of.

Today's is understanding the meaning of "The sweetness of the sweetness"
